Libby spent some time last Saturday working on what we’re calling “retroactive soil remediation”. That’s fancy talk for shutting the barn door after the horse has escaped. We barely dented the soil and weeded it before we planted everything, as I think this picture bears out.

It is my fondest hope that the little sign saying “Gardening Angel on Duty” will somehow bring some positive divine intervention to our cause. A large pile of mushroom manure appeared on Saturday morning last, so Libby hauled buckets of it to our plot and side-dressed everything.

Libby works, I take photographs…

When Amir took a look at it last night, he felt it needed more and he says he’ll bring some of his magic mixture around tomorrow. But I need to get down and dirty with a hand tool and work it into the soil. Although I really want this garden to be entirely organic, the tomatoes are looking sad two weeks after I fed them with fish fertilizer, so I think I’m going to try some fertilizer spikes on a couple of them to see if it makes a difference. I’ll bring some more fish fertilizer with me tomorrow and give everything a shot of that as well.
